David Ripp’s journey to finding suitable employment was filled with challenges despite having over twenty years of previous experience as a storeman. Struggling with low self-esteem and confidence and facing difficulties with an outdated resume and online job applications, David needed a breakthrough. His path to success began when he explored the Workforce Australia website and discovered the Employability Skills Training (EST) program offered by Jobfind Midland in WA.
Reaching out to Demelza St. George, an Employability Skills Training Facilitator at Jobfind Midland, David found a supportive ally who listened to his needs and explained how the EST program could be tailored to benefit him. Recognising that the program was just what he needed, David signed up and began working with Demelza.
One of the initial challenges David faced was his digital literacy, particularly with creating his resume. Using a Chromebook without access to Word, David struggled with formatting his documents. Demelza stepped in to assist him, guiding him through updating his CV and cover letter, and tailoring them for each job application. She also taught David how to navigate job application platforms like Seek and Indeed, significantly improving his digital skills and boosting his self-confidence.
To further enhance David’s confidence, Demelza organised group mock interview sessions with other EST clients. These sessions provided David with constructive feedback and helped him build confidence in a supportive, peer-driven environment. As David’s confidence grew, he progressed to one-on-one interview practice.
However, David faced a personal setback when his family experienced the loss of two beloved dogs, impacting his emotional well-being. Demelza demonstrated care and understanding by advising David on the importance of mental health and connecting him with free community support and online counselling services. Recognising David’s distress, she postponed the mock interview to give him time to heal.
When the rescheduled interview session took place, David arrived with a bright smile and exciting news—he had received a job offer as a Storeman with a new company in Perth, WA! His hard work and perseverance had paid off. To celebrate his success and ease his transition into the new job, Demelza presented David with a $50 Woolworths voucher to help with lunches during his first week of employment.
David’s story is a testament to the power of personalised support and resilience. With the help of Demelza and the EST program, David not only overcame his barriers but also secured a promising new role. His journey illustrates how tailored support and understanding can make all the difference in achieving employment success.
