The aviation industry in Cairns got a boost in May thanks to a Cairns Local Recovery Fund Activity supported by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Thirteen job seekers, including six from Jobfind’s Transition to Work service, completed an aviation logistics course with Cairns Aviation Skills Centre (CASC).
The 6-week training program provided an immersive, hands-on course tailored to prepare job seekers with the skills needed for immediate employment within the Cairns Airport General Aviation precinct. This program specifically targetted roles in maintenance, stores, technical records and compliance.
As a result, all of Jobfind’s Transition to Work candidates successfully secured work with employers at Cairns Airport.
Jobfind supports young people into careers in aviation
In and around Cairns, Jobfind delivers the Workforce Australia- Transition to Work service for young people aged 15-24 years.
Jobfind’s Transition to Work program connects young people with specialist Youth Mentors who provide comprehensive pre-employment assistance. Participants build practical skills to get a job, access training or education, discover local job openings and connect to relevant local community services for wraparound support.
Participants also benefit from connection to local jobs activities funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, such as the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre’s (CASC’s) Aviation Logistics Local Recovery Fund Activity.
Noel Tobias is Jobfind’s Employer Engagement Officer and personally accompanied Jobfind’s candidates to the preliminary information evening.
“Our young participants hadn’t previously considered the aviation industry, but once they understood the variety of roles in aviation, they were keen to get started,” says Noel.
Most of the course participants in the aviation skills program were under the age of 18 and the aviation skills course was their first vocational training experience, setting them on a promising career path.
Forging new careers
After completing the course, all 13 course graduates secured work with participating employers in fields related to mechanical trades and aviation logistics. Additionally, two graduates began an apprenticeship in aircraft mechanics.
To support its graduates in their new roles, Jobfind was pleased to present each of them with a well-equipped toolbox to help them start their careers on the right foot.
