A government-funded Local Recovery Project delivered by the National Disability Service helped Evan* find a job in the disability sector. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Entry to Care Roles project, Evan, 29, is accredited and working full-time in his dream industry and is now off income support.
A pathway to skills and disability care sector jobs
The 6-month program in Inner Metropolitan Melbourne included an 8-week pre-employment course with ONCALL Training College, interviews with employers, and three months of coaching post-employment.
Participants graduated from the program with an accredited Entry to Care Skillset that included topics on infection control, providing individualised support and following safe work practices.
The added support from NDS to help job seekers prepare for interviews and meet with potential employers was key to guiding the newly skilled job seekers into secure employment.
The role of Workforce Australia provider services
Local Recovery projects are funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations in support of a region’s employment priorities, including emerging workforce needs.
Workforce Australia service providers partner on projects to help their job seekers access the innovative training and employment opportunities.
As a participant in Jobfind’s Workforce Australia service in Flemington, Evan was one of the first to receive the opportunity to enrol. His employment consultant, Heena Nagpal said:
“The program was ideal for Evan as it matched his interest to start a career in the disability sector while providing accredited training and connection to employers.”
What’s more, Jobfind could also assist Evan to obtain all necessary checks and clearances including a Police Check, First Aid and CPR certificates.

After a few months working as a Disability Support Worker with his employer, Evan wrote:
“I’ve absolutely loved these past few months working there and couldn’t be happier. Everything I was taught at ONCALL Training was a big help preparing me for this line of work.”
