Simon Fraser, a dedicated truck driver in his late forties, faced a challenging journey on his path to sustainable employment. Despite holding a Heavy Vehicle License and boasting over fifteen years of driving experience, Simon’s part-time job as a tip truck driver provided just four hours of work per week, leaving him with financial strain and an uncertain future.
Living in a remote area with limited job opportunities, Simon’s struggle was compounded by his difficulties with updating his CV and navigating online job applications. His digital literacy was limited, and he found it hard to build the confidence needed for job interviews.
Turning Point with Jobfind Ballarat
In August 2024, Simon’s fortunes began to change when he was referred to the Employability Skills Training (EST) program at Jobfind Ballarat. Here, he was introduced to Andrea Barnes, an Employability Skills Training Facilitator known for her supportive and hands-on approach. The rapport between Simon and Andrea was immediate and positive.
Andrea worked closely with Simon to enhance his digital literacy skills. She guided him through creating a new CV and cover letter using Word and coached him on navigating job application platforms like Seek and Indeed. This personalised support not only improved Simon’s digital abilities but also significantly boosted his self-confidence.
Simon had previously struggled with job interviews due to low self-confidence. To address this, Andrea organised one-on-one mock interview sessions, as well as team-building activities and group mock interviews. These efforts helped Simon become more comfortable speaking in front of others, boosting his self-confidence.
Success on the Horizon
The results were swift. Within a week of starting the EST program, Simon had applied for several positions with his newly updated CV and cover letter. His renewed confidence and improved application materials led to an invitation for an interview. Andrea was there every step of the way, helping Simon prepare and calm his nerves.
The hard work paid off, after the interview, Simon called Andrea with the news that he had secured a full-time position as a truck driver with a construction company in Ballarat. He began his new role on September 2nd and updated Andrea a week later, expressing his happiness with the job, his positive interactions with the team, and the relief of having secure, full-time employment.
Simon’s journey from financial strain to employment stability highlights the impact of tailored support and personalised training. With Andrea’s help, Simon not only secured a job but also regained his confidence and hope for the future.
